How Much Does Outside General Counsel Cost?

Outside general counsel cost depends on the ownership, access, recurring scope, legal systems, and larger matters the organization needs, not simply a block of lawyer hours.

Outside general counsel pricing varies because organizations are not buying the same legal function. One company may need contract ownership and leadership access. Another may need board support, compliance oversight, legal systems, and coordination of several specialists.

    What usually drives cost

    • The number of leaders and business functions using counsel.
    • The volume and complexity of recurring contracts and decisions.
    • The amount of proactive review, planning, and legal-system maintenance.
    • The urgency and predictability of the work.
    • The need for board, executive, regulatory, or transaction support.
    • Whether larger projects are included or scoped separately.

    Common pricing structures

Models may include a monthly recurring fee, a defined subscription or membership, hourly work, project fees, or a combination. A recurring fee is most useful when the scope and operating expectations are clear. Hourly pricing can fit unpredictable or limited work, but it may discourage the regular communication that helps counsel anticipate issues.

    Compare ownership, not only rates

A lower monthly number can be expensive if leadership still has to identify every issue, coordinate multiple firms, and rebuild context for each assignment. A useful comparison looks at who owns priorities, how access works, which recurring systems are maintained, and what happens when a larger matter appears.

    Why an assessment helps

A short assessment can define the legal landscape and recommend the right recurring scope before pricing is set. That avoids guessing based on company size or a generic package.
